Who we are

The SPIR was founded by a small group of dedicated physicians who were passionate about advancing the practice of image-guided procedures in infants and children. Early conversations began at the 2006 Pediatric Interventional Radiology Symposium (PIRS) meeting in Toronto. Soon thereafter, at the March 2007 Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) meeting in Seattle, formation of a new society dedicated to Pediatric IR was proposed. After the Society of Pediatric Radiology (SPR) meeting in Miami in May 2007, an election was held. Seven international board of directors were chosen. Professor Jim Donaldson was elected as our first SPIR president. In May 2008 the first SPIR bylaws were officially approved by the inaugural SPIR board of directors. The board of directors spent the next year addressing topics of concern to SPIR membership and planning the first meeting of our society. With the help of many SPIR member volunteers, our inaugural meeting was held in Napa Valley, California, in October 2009. Early leaders felt it important to include anyone who wished to participate, and our spirit of inclusivity remains with us today.
