It is with great pleasure and excitement that we announce the upcoming 12th International Meeting of the SPIR in Toronto, Canada.
The overall theme for this year’s meeting is “Back to our Roots, Looking to the Future”. Many years ago, the Society was born during the biennial Pediatric Interventional Radiology Symposium held here in Toronto. Back then, a group of approximately 50 Pediatric IRs from around the world gathered to share their experiences. Over the years, the Society has flourished and grown to more than 350 members, welcoming physicians, technologists, nurse practitioners, nurses, physician assistants and members-in-training. Sessions will challenge us to evaluate our current practices and look for new IR aspects and techniques that can be applied to children. Looking to the future, we will focus on Artificial Intelligence and Robotics and how to implement them in Pediatric IR. But we must not forget about our past experiences and achievements, so we will include sessions dedicated to organ systems such as Lungs and Renal, and sessions on broad topics such as Oncology, Lymphatics and Vascular Anomalies, with an emphasis on cutting-edge new discoveries. See below for a complete list of sessions.
We look forward to seeing you at the best pediatric IR meeting in the world!
SPIR 2024 Featured Sessions
Artificial Intelligence (AI) - our focus is on the future... But what is AI and what are the opportunities to integrate it with Pediatric Interventional Radiology? From the basics to current applications of AI in IR.
Robotics in IR – will we become obsolete? Definitely not!!! But in the era of precision medicine, robotics will help us to deliver treatments in a consistent and predictable manner. A review of current robotic devices being developed for IR will be presented.
Hepato-biliary – discuss challenging biliary complications management, the advantages and disadvantages of different protocols, the use of stents, and the challenges of biliary reconstructions after failed minimally invasive treatments.
Lungs – from airway biodegradable stents and pulmonary AVMs (arteriovenous malformations) coiling to lung metastasis ablations. New techniques that can be offered to help the treatment of patients with lung and airway diseases.
Neuro - review on intra- and extra-cranial Pediatric Neuro-interventions and their unique challenges and differences when treating children. This session may spark ideas on how to use these techniques or equipment in body interventions.
Renal – presentations on what is new in the management of renovascular hypertension, renal disease, and renal failure. Should we treat Midaortic Syndrome? Are we ready to offer endovascular arteriovenous fistulae for children?
Lymphatics – review diagnostic and therapeutic techniques available to manage these challenging conditions: from medical approaches to invasive interventions.
Oncology – what new techniques are available and how can we offer children this vast area of Interventional Radiology? From ablations to radioembolizations and palliative care.
Vascular Anomalies – Arteriovenous malformations treatment: How to manage such a difficult condition? Are there new strategies available?
Patient Clinical Management – who and when should be anticoagulated after a pediatric IR procedure? When and for how long? The child is bleeding... how does the anesthetist manage the acute bleed and what physiological changes happen pre and post a transfusion. This session will be dedicated to intra and post procedure patient care.
Pediatric Pearls – a session on what is not in the book... Words of wisdom from lessons learned by our experienced IR peers.
Extreme IR – a new addition to the program. Pediatric IR cases that highlight the challenges faced by the IR and how problems are solved “thinking outside the box”.
Scientific sessions – three dedicated sessions for presentations of the best abstracts submitted on new developments and scientific discoveries in Pediatric Interventional Radiology.
M&Ms – by popular demand, two sessions will be dedicated to the M&M topic. It will include real cases, a round table discussion about the M&M process, a guide on how to learn from this experience in a teaching environment, and suggestions on strategies to preserve the well-being of the team involved in the case.
Research – fortunately, children are not affected by disease so often but, with limited numbers, this session will focus on how we can work collectively to create robust data to support evidence-based decisions in Pediatric IR.
Global Outreach – a session to share the experience of Pediatric IR around the world, learn from others and discuss how we move forward promoting Pediatric IR globally.
BRAND NEW Afternoon module exclusive for Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Technologists & Physician Assistants - A module by and for all the associate health care providers that significantly helps on the IR care of so many children. An opportunity for discussion and exchange of ideas and experiences.
